RED Announces New Cameras & Accessories

RED Scarlet

RED, the makers of the hard to come by, 4K digital camera RED ONE, have made a number of new product announcements at the latest NAB show.

The first big announcement is of their mini version of the ONE, dubbed the Scarlet,  which shoots 3K footage to dual Compact Flash cards, at the cost of about $1000 per K (or $3000).  If you’ve been drooling over the ONE, but found the $17,500 price tag a bit steep, the Scarlet might be the next best thing to sliced bread, until you make your first hit film, though with the following specs, the Scarlet might be good enough:

  • NEW 2/3″ MYSTERIUM X SENSOR
  • 1-120 FPS (180FPS BURST)
  • UP TO 100 MB/SEC REDCODE RAW AND RGB RECORDING TO DUAL COMPACT FLASH
  • 4.8″ LCD
  • 8X T2.8 RED ZOOM LENS
  • FULL AUTO OR FULL MANUAL SHOOTING MODES
  • HDMI and HD-SDI
  • FIREWIRE 800 and USB2
  • STILL MODE
  • COMPATIBLE WITH MANY RED ONE ACCESSORIES
  • WI-FI CONTROL

Besides the Scarlet, they trotted out the new Epic camera, a full 5K resolution beast that is estimated to sell for around $30,000 and allows RED ONE users to get a trade in credit of $17,500 for their (now obsolete ?) ONEs.  For those rare ONE owners, here’s what you’ll get in an upgrade:

  • FULL FRAME S35MM NEW MYSTERIUM X SENSOR
  • 1-100 FPS
  • UP TO 100 MB/SEC. REDCODE RAW AND RGB RECORDING TO REDFLASH
  • FULL SIZE DUAL LINK HD-SDI, 2-XLR AUDIO INPUTS AND HDMI
  • WI-FI CONTROL
  • FIREWIRE 800 and USB2
  • 6 POUND FULLY MACHINED ALUMINUM BODY WITH HYBRID STAINLESS PL MOUNT
  • COMPATIBLE WITH MOST RED ONE ACCESSORIES
  • FULLY UPGRADABLE SENSOR, BODY, BOARDS AND MOUNT.

Finally, there’s the RED RAY, with the following specs:

  • PLAYS 4K, 2K, 1080P, 720P AND SD FROM RED DISC AND RED EXPRESS
  • ALSO PLAYS NATIVE RAW R3D FILES FROM COMPACT FLASH

Everything is expected to be available in early 2009.
